Wessex and Jersey Virtual Area Show 21 June 2020
The Show will go on was the mantra of the Wessex and Jersey Area Show team!
The Show team, lead by Lynn Mackenzie, had already put in a great deal of preparatory work for this year's Area Show before the Coronavirus pandemic forced us into 'lockdown' and the Show was cancelled. The RHS having initially cancelled the annual Chelsea Flower Show came up with the idea of making it a virtual Show instead and this gave Lynn the thought that if they can do it so can Wessex and Jersey Area!
Using a reduced schedule the Show team invited members to do a design based on one of the following titles:
- The Cold of the Moon
- The Other Side of the Fence – exhibit to include the technique of hedging.
- A Chance to Shine – craft exhibit, a necklace.
- The Beauty of the Garden – exhibit to include an urn or patio container.
- Foraged Fusion
- A Touch of Nature – small scale exhibit, please put a £1 coin next to exhibit to show scale.
Members could do as many designs as they wished as this was not being held as a competition, normal rules did not apply. Members were encouraged to reuse what they had available in their boxes, garages and stores and to use the flowers and foliage from their gardens to produce an array of designs to be shared by everyone via the Area Facebook page. They then had to take a photo of their arrangement and sent it to Lynn.
The Show team got the wheels in motion and flyers promoting the event were sent out to all the Clubs in the area. The Show team were hopeful of about 30 entries and in the end they received a whooping 143 from 30 different Clubs, they were totally overwhelmed and delighted!
Two members of our Club sent entries to the Virtual Show and their arrangements can be seen below:
